The Committee to Protect Journalists is co-sponsoring a series of journalism-focused panels along with Sophia University and Waseda University in Tokyo, on June 2 and 4. Both events are open to the public, although Sophia University asks that you register here.
Highlights include a keynote address by David Kaye, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression, on June 2. Results from Kaye’s in-depth study of the Japanese media are due to be released shortly.
The panels at Sophia, which form part of the university’s U.N. Week, will focus on global press freedom issues, including in the U.S., and journalist safety. Panels at Waseda on June 4 will cover investigative journalism, including new models for sustainable efforts in Asia, and a presentation by the Waseda Chronicle non-profit investigative journalism project that launched earlier this year.
CPJ board members due to take part in the panels include former CPJ Chairman Sandra Mims Rowe, former editor of The Oregonian; Chair Kathleen Carroll, former executive editor and senior vice president of The Associated Press; Jacob Weisberg, chairman of The Slate Group; David Schlesinger, founder and managing director of the Hong Kong-based media and China consultancy Tripod Advisors and former editor-in-chief of Reuters News. Also attending will be Kathy Gannon, the AP senior correspondent for Pakistan and Afghanistan; Kim Yongjin, editor-in-chief of Newstapa in South Korea; and Gemma Bagayaua-Mendoza, of Rappler in the Philippines and Sherry Lee, Editorial Managing Director of The Reporter in Taiwan. CPJ’s executive director Joel Simon and Asia program coordinator Steven Butler will also attend.
