Following news that Italian freelance photojournalist Fabio Polenghi was fatally shot, and at least two other international journalists wounded today as security forces stormed a makeshift camp of “Red Shirt” protesters in Bangkok, we issued this statement:
“We are shocked at these shootings and send our condolences to Fabio Polenghi’s family and colleagues,” said Robert Mahoney, CPJ deputy director. “This is the second death of a journalist covering the ongoing unrest in Bangkok. The Thai authorities must conduct a thorough and transparent inquiry into today’s killing and ensure that security forces protect journalists and respect their right to cover these events.”
