Making headlines today across the English and Spanish-language press is the brutal murder of Mexican crime reporter Armando Rodríguez.
The Associated Press and Reuters both have coverage of his death on Thursday in Cuidad Juarez–Rodríguez, a long-time journalist for El Diario, was fatally shot as he prepared to take his children to school. Texas-based papers the Dallas Morning News, San Antonio Express, and El Paso Times have stories on the murder. The Washington Post is running a news brief on the shooting, and the Web site Newspaper Tree also has coverage.
In the Spanish-language press, The Miami Herald, El Nacional, La Cronica de Hoy, and Milenio are all running articles. CPJ released an alert and a statement yesterday calling for a swift and thorough investigaton of Rodríguez’s murder.
CBS News has coverage of another developing story, the shooting of Japanese journalist Motoki Yotsukura from Asahi Shimbun, and Afghan journalist Sami Yousafzai, a regular contributor to CBSNews.com and a special correspondent for Newsweek. The shootings occurred earlier today during an apparent abduction attempt near Peshawar, which is the capital of the North West Frontier Province adjoining Pakistan’s Federally Administered Tribal Areas. The area has been the scene of a number of attacks on foreigners and government officials in the last few weeks.
