A female journalist was gang-raped while on assignment in the Mirzapur district in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh on March 27, 2014, according to news reports. The journalist, who works with a Haridwar-based daily in the neighboring state of Uttarakhand, was working on a story about a historic pilgrimage site in the area, the reports said.
The journalist was looking for transportation after finishing her visit to a local temple, where she was gathering information for her story, when three men in a sports utility vehicle abducted her and took her to a secluded forest, the reports said. Two of them raped her.
The men dumped the journalist and fled. The journalist reported the assailants’ vehicle registration number to the police, news accounts reported. The vehicle was seized by the police, and one of the accused was arrested on March 28, reports said. The journalist sought medical treatment at a local hospital.
