What is the humanitarian function of journalism in wartime? How does international humanitarian law protect journalists? Why is impunity the most important challenge facing journalists working in conflict zones?
These were among the questions addressed when Joel Simon, CPJ executive director, spoke at a live Web seminar on January 17 hosted by the Program on Humanitarian Policy and Conflict Research at Harvard University. On the panel, entitled “Targeting the Truth: International Humanitarian Law and the Protection of Journalists in Conflict Zones,” Simon was joined by The New Yorker‘s Jon Lee Anderson, Hedayat Abdel Nabi from the Press Emblem Campaign, and Emily Crawford from University of Sydney Law School.
