In response to today’s conviction of former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori, who was sentenced to 25 years in prison for human rights crimes, the Committee to Protect Journalists issued the following statement…
“We welcome the conviction of Alberto Fujimori by the Peruvian Supreme Court for grave human rights violations, including the 1992 kidnapping of prominent journalist Gustavo Gorriti,” said CPJ’s Americas Senior Program Coordinador Carlos Lauría. “Fujimori’s conviction is an important step in the fight against impunity in attacks on journalists, particularly in Peru where public officials suspected of masterminding the murder of at least two journalists have gone unpunished.”
